Master Classics

The MA Classics preserves the strengths of specialized expertise in the classical studies of the ancient world – which are excellently represented in Heidelberg across the individual disciplines – and complements them with a multifaceted, interdisciplinary, and comparative approach to the cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and adjacent regions. Students receive a sound education in their chosen focal area, which qualifies them for a doctorate, whilst at the same time developing a broad interdisciplinary perspective. This enables them to address complex research questions from multiple perspectives and with methodological rigour.

The MA in Classics can be studied within six different focal areas:

  • Ancient History
  • Byzantine Archaeology and Art History
  • Greek Studies
  • Classical Archaeology
  • Latin Studies
  • Papyrology and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines

Each focal area pursues specific qualification objectives tailored to the programme. The modules offer in-depth study within each discipline and ensure eligibility for a doctorate. The fundamental interdisciplinary concept is relfected in joint courses that transcend disciplinary boundaries.

Course Structure

The MA Classics combines research-oriented teaching with a strong interdisciplinary focus. When applying, students choose a focal area in which they complete modules worth 51 CP, as well as a Master's thesis (30 CP) and an oral examination (4 CT).  This area is supplemented by joint interdisciplinary modules worth 35 CP.

Within the structured and modular programme, the curriculum offers a high degree of flexibility. It provides scope for research-led study and enables students to male targeted use of the wide range of courses offered by Heidelberg University.

In addition to its interdisciplinary nature, the MA Classics focuses on a range of other key areas. The broad perspective on Classical Studies established in Heidelberg also shapes this programme, allowing for contemporary specialisations in terms of theories and methods. This openness to theory is by no means at odds with rigorous source-based research – on the contrary: Papyrology, Numismatics and, in particular, Greek and Latin Epigraphy are closely linked to research in Heidelberg and integrated into teaching with exceptional breadth. Furthermore, through practice-oriented elements – for example in the fields of museology, science communication, field archaeology or digital humanities – the MA Classics enhances professional qualifications even beyond the traditional academic career path.
